Make your own Walnut Sparkle toilet cleaner

Black walnut shells are great for home cleaning! Black walnut shells are a powerful natural abrasive that is natural, renewable, biodegradable, septic-safe. They will scratch some materials but not glass, porcelain or stainless steel so combining black walnut shell powder with baking soda creates an effective scouring powder that targets common toilet or sink cleaning needs that are not related to mineral deposits. Stains that resist Walnut Sparkle can often be addressed by following up with an acid-based cleaner, such as vinegar. No one has to guess what's in our cleaners because we publish our home cleaner recipes. Here's how to make Walnut Sparkle at home:

Supplies Needed:

  • 1.5 oz Black Squirrel Farms black walnut fine (<60 mesh) shell powder
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • A 1-qt or larger container with a screw or snap on top (for mixing)
  • (Helpful) A funnel
  • An empty Walnut Sparkle container or other container(s) in which you plan to keep your final product
  • Open, well-ventilated work area, ideally outside

Directions:

  • Add one cup of baking soda to the container, dumping slowly to minimize possible dust.

  • Screw or snap the top onto the container.
  • Shake the container until the baking soda and walnut shell powder are well mixed.
  • Put the container down and let the mixture settle for at least 30 seconds. Your Walnut Sparkle is ready for use.
